Boat and Watercraft Insurance in Texas
Whether it's a bass boat on Lake Conroe, a pontoon on Livingston, or something that runs the bay, the policy details that matter are agreed value versus actual cash value, hurricane haul-out, and how far offshore you're covered.
Who this is for
- Bass, ski, and pontoon boat owners on Texas lakes
- Gulf Coast owners who need named-storm terms reviewed
- Jet ski and personal watercraft owners
- Anyone whose marina or lender requires proof of liability
What it covers
- Hull coverage on an agreed-value or actual-cash-value basis
- Liability for injury and property damage on the water
- Motor, trailer, and on-board equipment
- Fishing gear, electronics, and personal effects
- Towing and on-water assistance
- Fuel spill and wreck removal liability
What it doesn't cover
- Racing, chartering, and commercial use
- Wear, marine growth, osmosis, and gradual deterioration
- Operating outside the stated navigation area
- Damage from failing to prepare the boat for a named storm
Agreed value versus actual cash value
An agreed-value policy pays the number written on the policy if the boat is a total loss. An actual-cash-value policy pays depreciated value at the time of loss, which can be dramatically less on a five-year-old boat. Gulf Coast owners should also read the named-storm deductible and any haul-out requirement before hurricane season.
Boat & Watercraft insurance questions Texans ask
Straight answers to the questions we field most often on boat & watercraft coverage in Texas.
- Is boat insurance required in Texas?
- The state doesn't require it, but lenders and most marinas do, and liability on the water can far exceed the value of the boat itself.
- Does homeowners insurance cover my boat?
- Only small, low-horsepower craft, and usually with very limited liability. Anything with real horsepower needs its own policy.
- Is my trailer covered?
- On most watercraft policies the trailer can be scheduled with the boat, covering theft and road damage in addition to on-water loss.
- Do I need coverage for saltwater use?
- Yes — navigation territory matters. Coverage written for inland lakes may not respond in the bay or offshore, so tell us where you actually run the boat.
- How much does boat insurance cost in Texas?
- Mostly a function of hull value, horsepower, where you navigate, and your boating experience. A bass boat on Lake Conroe and a center console running offshore price very differently.
- Does boat insurance cover engine damage?
- Sudden accidental loss is covered; wear, corrosion, and lack of maintenance are not. Some carriers offer mechanical breakdown coverage for newer engines as an add-on.
- What is fuel spill and wreck removal coverage?
- Federal and state law can make you responsible for removing a sunk vessel and cleaning up spilled fuel. Those costs are separate from hull value, and good watercraft policies include a specific limit for them.
- Do I get a discount for a boating safety course?
- Most watercraft carriers credit a completed safety course, and several also discount for layup periods, multi-policy bundling, and paid-in-full terms.
