Motorcycle Insurance in Texas
A motorcycle policy is not just a smaller auto policy. Custom parts, accessories, safety apparel, and how much you actually ride all change the right structure — and most riders are underinsured on exactly those items.
Who this is for
- Riders adding a new or used bike
- Owners of customized or accessorized motorcycles
- Seasonal riders who want layup or reduced-use options
- Riders carrying only state minimum liability today
What it covers
- Bodily injury and property damage liability
- Collision and comprehensive (theft, fire, vandalism)
- Uninsured / underinsured motorist
- Custom parts and accessories coverage
- Safety apparel and helmet coverage on many carriers
- Roadside assistance and trip interruption
What it doesn't cover
- Track days, racing, and timed events
- Passengers on some bare-minimum liability policies — passenger liability may need to be added
- Wear and mechanical failure
- Business or delivery use without an endorsement
Custom parts are the coverage most riders miss
Base motorcycle policies often cap accessory coverage at a low default — sometimes $1,000 or less. Exhaust, bags, seat, chrome, audio, and paint can easily run several times that. Tell us what's on the bike and we'll set the accessory limit to match instead of discovering the gap after a claim.
Motorcycle insurance questions Texans ask
Straight answers to the questions we field most often on motorcycle coverage in Texas.
- Is motorcycle insurance required in Texas?
- Yes — riders must carry at least the same 30/60/25 liability limits required for autos.
- Does my auto insurance cover my motorcycle?
- No. Motorcycles need their own policy, though most carriers will apply a multi-policy discount when it sits alongside your home or auto.
- Can I reduce coverage in the winter?
- Some carriers offer layup or reduced-usage periods where you keep comprehensive but suspend collision. It saves money, but never drop liability on a bike you might ride.
- Does a safety course lower my rate?
- With most carriers, yes. A completed motorcycle safety course is one of the more reliable discounts available to Texas riders.
- Is motorcycle insurance required in Texas?
- Yes — the same 30/60/25 liability minimums that apply to cars apply to motorcycles, and you must be able to show proof of financial responsibility.
- Does motorcycle insurance cover my helmet and gear?
- Only when the policy includes safety apparel or accessory coverage. Limits are usually modest by default, so if you ride in serious gear tell us and we'll raise it.
- Are custom parts covered on a motorcycle policy?
- Not beyond a small built-in limit. Exhaust, bags, paint, and chrome need to be scheduled as accessories, otherwise a total loss pays only stock value.
- Can I pay only during riding season?
- Some riders drop to comprehensive-only storage coverage in winter, but that removes liability and can create a coverage lapse. We usually recommend keeping the policy in force year-round in Texas.
